The author problem has a positive side. Being an author is impossible, but being a writer is easy. If you write, you are a writer.
No one else grants you this status. A publisher accepting your manuscript does not make you a writer. A million-dollar advance does not make you a writer. A legion of fans does not make you a writer. Your professor’s opinion does not make you a writer.
On the days that you write, you are a writer.
On days you don’t write, you are not.
